4K vs 1440p for Productivity: Which Should You Buy?

More pixels mean sharper text and more room — but also higher cost and scaling quirks. Here's how to decide for work.

What you'll learn

  • 1440p is the value sweet spot at 27"
  • 4K gives sharper text but usually needs scaling
  • Bigger than 27"? 4K starts to pay off
  • Factor in the GPU/laptop that has to drive it

For a productivity desk, the resolution debate usually comes down to two options: 1440p (2560×1440) and 4K (3840×2160). Both are excellent. The right pick depends on screen size, how sharp you want text, and your budget.

The case for 1440p

At 27", 1440p hits a genuine sweet spot: crisp text, plenty of usable space for two windows side by side, and it runs at 100% scaling so nothing looks fuzzy or oversized. It's also cheaper and easier to drive, which matters for laptops and mid-range GPUs.

The case for 4K

4K packs in roughly 78% more pixels than 1440p. On a 27–32" screen that translates to noticeably sharper text — easier on the eyes over long days — and more real estate once you apply scaling. The catch: at 27" you'll almost always run 4K with display scaling (around 150%), and a few older apps still handle scaling poorly.

Scaling, briefly

At 4K/27" most people set 150% scaling: UI stays a comfortable size while text renders with extra sharpness. It's seamless in modern apps.

Don't forget what drives it

4K is more demanding. For pure office work any modern laptop copes fine, but if you'll also game at 4K you'll want a capable GPU. On a lightweight laptop, 1440p is the friendlier target.

The verdict

  • Choose 1440p at 27" for the best balance of clarity, space, cost and simplicity.
  • Choose 4K at 27–32" if you stare at text all day and want the sharpest image — and you're happy to use scaling.
  • Going ultrawide? That's a different trade-off — see how to choose a monitor.
